American Idiots

Does the world really need another rock opera?  It appears that the answer is “yes”, based upon the early reviews of the latest creation from Green Day.

The San Francisco Bay Area band, whose last album was the stunning (and 12x multi-platinum) American Idiot, appear to have delivered the goods again with their long-awaited follow-up.

21st Century Breakdown, produced by the legendary Butch Vig and due on May 15, was previewed in its entirety during a live performance this past Tuesday at the Fox Oakland Theater and reviewers from both Rolling Stone and the San Francisco Chronicle were blown away.

The career transformation of Green Day – and its three-man core of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool – is nothing short of amazing.

The snotty punks who burst onto the scene 15 years ago with the adolescent Dookie and its ubiquitous Basket Case would never have been expected to be such accomplished political and social ombudsmen in their thirties.

But if these reviews (including RS’s definitive nod to this being Green Day’s best work yet) are any indication, then one more release just got added to this spring’s schedule of must-hear music.  No news yet on tour dates, but be assured that this one will be big.
