The Latest Installment of Not Necessarily “Breaking News”

Look, honestly, the less said about Brett Favre at this point, the better.  The daily (hourly?) updates from ESPN are amusing, providing the “Worldwide Leader” the opportunity to convince themselves and their viewers that there are actually breaking developments in the story.

The obvious fact is that Favre’s intention to play for the Minnesota Vikings has been a fait accompli for some time now.  I’ve already forgotten that he did actually “retire” for the second time back in February.

While his agent Bus Cook has done plenty of clucking over the last few months, Favre has not made himself available for an interview – until this evening, when he joined Joe Buck for the inaugural airing of HBO’s Joe Buck Live.

Shocking, then, that Favre admitted that he would like to play this fall for the Vikings.  If anyone had any doubt that this notion has long gone past the stage of consideration to one of certainty, note his reference at one point to the Vikings as “we”.

Expect many more hours of pointless chatter on the subject prior to the inevitable press conference announcing his return.  The carnival has picked up and moved from Broadway to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Vikings fans, enjoy the attention.  Just don’t expect to see that Super Bowl shutout streak end anytime soon.  This is bound to end badly by December or January, despite all the excitement sure to be generated in Minneapolis this July and August.

And Packer fans?  Well, there’s always this:
