Dave Grohl is never really “on hiatus”

Dave Grohl, frontman for the fantastic band Foo Fighters (and all around rock ‘n roll everyman), was rumored to be “on hiatus” after the birth of his second daughter in April.  And there is no doubt that he is staying close to his Los Angeles home and getting in some quality daddy time.

But the man is prolific – he seemingly does not ever stop performing or recording, even in his so-called down time.  And, sure enough, news this week of an upcoming live concert and Grohl’s unrelated participation in a new “supergroup” predictably (but thankfully) keeps Grohl on our radar for the foreseeable future.

First, Grohl has accepted an invitation to bring the Foo Fighters to the White House tomorrow for annual holiday festivities on the South Lawn as part of a “Salute The Troops” USO concert.  Not a bad gig for a former punk rocker who spent his teen years in nearby suburban Virginia.  The short concert, preceding fireworks over the National Mall, will stream live directly from the official White House website (details here).

Additionally, with Foo Fighters taking a break from the studio after the 2007 release of Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (their 6th studio album), Grohl has recently been able to take the time to work on a long-rumored project with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, currently recording their debut album.

If this future album comes anywhere near the quality of the output of Grohl and Homme when they collaborated on the amazing Queens of the Stone Age release, Songs For The Deaf (for my money, a lock for one of the top 10 albums of this decade), then it will make the wait for the next Foos release a little easier to handle.

And speaking of Foo Fighters, can you believe that it’s really been 12 years since Grohl & company came up with this all-time classic?
