Jim James creates great music under some really bad pseudonyms

It is a fools’ game to try to predict the next idea out of the fertile mind of Jim James.  The best thing to do is just go along for the ride.

With his band My Morning Jacket riding a wave of critical and commercial success, frontman James has been afforded the opportunity to work on additional projects prior to working on a new MMJ record.

The first of these projects has actually been in the can since 2001, a tribute to George Harrison (titled, of course, Tribute To) which James recorded soon after the death of the Beatles great.  Using the ridiculous synonym Yim Yames, this will be his first official solo release.  More details, including streaming versions of all 6 songs on the EP and instructions on how to receive a free download of the track “Behind That Locked Door” are available here (courtesy of Spin.com).

Ah, but as if Yim Yames was not enough, James also gives us the equally absurdly titled Monsters Of Folk, in which James teams up with good buddies Conor Oberst and M. Ward to re-create in the studio what the three “Monsters” have previously accomplished in a live setting.  Despite the dumb name, I actually expect this to be a fantastic record.  We’ll need to wait until the fall (September 22nd, to be exact) for the release of the record, but more details are likely to be shared soon on the Monsters’ official website.

In the meantime, for a Jim James fix, and for proof that nothing at all is off-limits with this guy, check out his take on a Lionel Richie/Commodores classic in this rare video.  Not for everyone, I suppose, but the rest of us will just look forward to appreciating the upcoming new material and whatever he cooks up next.
