Don’t Hate The Game, Hate The Player

Well, Michael Vick may not be the most sought-after free agent quarterback in the NFL these days, but he does lay claim to one “honor” that was recently bestowed upon him – earning the top spot on Forbes’ list of “The Most Disliked People In Sports”.

Finding a home for Vick has created such an uproar that even yesterday’s simple admission of Green Bay Packers’ GM Ted Thompson that the team had not ruled out the possibility of providing a landing spot for the wayward felon was deemed newsworthy.

By the way, here is the entire exchange with Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette that started this most recent firestorm after the reporter’s inquiry into the Packers’ interest in Vick:

Thompson: (Long pause) “Uh … what is the answer that we give to questions like this? We’re always looking to improve our team, and we look at all options at all times. I wouldn’t care to speculate in terms of the odds or the percentages or anything like that.”

So, you have looked at him then?

Thompson: “We look at everything. Or, not everything. We don’t look at stuff from like across the ocean or something.”

Have there been any discussions on whether it’s worth pursuing Vick?

Thompson: “We’ve had discussions about a large number of things, and we’re always talking personnel — different scenarios and things like that.”

But this is a pretty unique guy, a different situation …

Thompson: “But the routine we go through is the same. It doesn’t mean any more that we’re likely to do it or less likely — it’s a routine we go through. It’s automatic.”

Take from that what you will, but there is no doubt that any team, including the Packers, will need to weigh the negative publicity associated with adding a character such as Vick to their roster.

Sports fans are among the most forgiving group on the planet and Vick or any the others pictured on this dubious list still may have the chance to turn around public opinion before their careers are over.

Except for that guy at #10.  John McEnroe, just be glad that your “career” is so far off the radar that even you can’t find a way back to #1.  Probably.
