Serious movie-making

It’s that time of year when you can safely return to the movie theater.  The industry provides very little reason to check out its summer fare anymore, except maybe to escape the heat by sitting in air conditioned darkness for a couple hours.

But fall typically brings a greater degree of sophistication and – quite frankly – quality for the discerning moviewatcher.  This year is no exception and Peter Travers of Rolling Stone previews the most notable of the current lot of scheduled openings this autumn.

In a semi-related vein, The Onion’s A.V. Club uses the opening of “Oscar season” to feature a list of 27 movies about the difficulty of making movies.  Clearly a mixed bag, but interesting throughout, and any list that gives me an excuse to link to the trailer to American Movie is all right by me.

As for this fall, I’ll be checking out reviews & showtimes for Pirate Radio, The Invention of Lying, and A Serious Man – at least for starters.

A Serious Man

Go explore some headier fare soon for yourself too.  No advance purchase necessary.
