Meet the perfect 13

Forget about the rankings.  Those don’t mean a thing until November rolls around.

But do pay attention to the undefeateds.  Most of the final thirteen are a long way from national championship consideration, but none of them can be eliminated from the discussion until they fall off this list.

There are no guarantees that any of these will make it through the season without a blemish, but any of them could run the table.

The 13 schools that have made it this far without a loss (including today’s results) are as follows:

Big 12 – Kansas, Missouri, Texas
Big East – Cincinnati, South Florida
Big Ten – Iowa, Wisconsin
Mountain West – TCU
SEC – Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU
WAC – Boise State

Note that the remaining schedules of the teams on this list guarantees that no conference could generate more than one perfect record by the end of conference play.  And, by all accounts, Florida, Texas, and Alabama are seen as the most legitimate of the current undefeateds.

But it’s a given that at least one school on this list will emerge as a genuine threat to crack the national title discussion by the time the cold winds of November find their way into college football stadiums across the country.

Keep winning football games and good things will follow.  At this point, preseason predictions and overblown analysis mean nothing.  Even tomorrow’s updated rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.

But this is when it starts to get interesting.  After all, that’s why they play the games.

Now, about that post-season playoff…er, payoff…
