Mali’s newest musical ambassador

I’d say that it’s something in the water, but my sources tell me that the West African country of Mali resides mostly in the southern Sahara.

Either way, despite being late to the game, it appears to be a perfect time for me to acknowledge the musical production of some fantastic contemporary Malian musicians.

I’ll give you a few names to start with: Toumani Diabaté, Amadou et Mariam, and the late guitarist Ali Farka Touré.  And now making inroads into North America is the latter’s son, Vieux Farka Touré.

His excellent second album, Fondo, was released earlier this year and don’t make the hasty assumption that it’s not for you.

If you haven’t heard Vieux Farka Touré yet, be sure to check him out at last month’s Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle in this acoustic performance from KEXP’s Bumbershoot Music Lounge stage.

Count me as a believer, even as a novice listener to this brand of world music.  The world is getting smaller every day and music libraries are going to continue to grow larger with more and more diverse options to choose from.

Vieux Farka Touré’s Fondo is the right music for the right time.
